Stop Chasing Validation: How Self-Trust Creates Real Momentum
A quote often attributed to Michael J. Herbert says, “A relationship without trust is like a car without gas. You can stay in it all you want, but it won’t go anywhere.”
This isn’t just true for your relationships with others, it’s also true about your relationship with yourself.
There’s nothing wrong with wanting clarity, encouragement, or a roadmap, especially when life feels uncertain or heavy. But there comes a time when you realize: No one else can drive this car for you. And even if they could, you may not like where they take it.
If you keep comparing yourself to others or seeking their approval, you’ll expect yourself to go-go-go even when you may not have a clear destination… But you’ll stall out halfway across the bridge or in the middle of the tunnel. Because while praise and “likes” from others might give you a quick boost, external validation will never fuel you long-term.
I’ve loved personal development my whole life. When I graduated with my psychology degree and started my own business, I started learning more about all the things that school never prepared me for. How to get clients, how to build a website, how to explain what I do in a way others can actually understand, and dozens of other topics. But what took me a few years to realize (and what I still sometimes have to remind myself of), is that no one knows me or my business like I do, and everyone will always have their own two cents to throw in based on their experiences.
The more you rely on others to get you where you want to go, the more doubt you’ll feel about your own skills. Because there’s always more to learn and always people who are further along than you.
However, when you start taking even the smallest aligned actions, you begin to see what feels good to you. And with each step, your trust in yourself grows.
You also learn how to fuel yourself along the way.
Whether it’s a walk in the sun, a nourishing meal, a deep breath, a playlist that makes you dance, or your own inner pep talk, you become the one who knows what you need best. Because you also realize that no one else is on your journey.
Self-trust isn’t a destination. It’s both the fuel that keeps you going and the road you build yourself.
This doesn’t mean you have to do everything alone or that others won’t “get you.” You’re still allowed to be held, supported, and celebrated. But you stop depending on others to live your life for you. You stop asking, “How can I be more like them?” and start asking, “What helps me become more of me?”
You become your own power source.
